MAKING A GREAT PODCAST IS ONLY STEP TWO

  1. WE START WITH STRATEGY

2. WE PRODUCE IT FLAWLESSLY

3. WE GET THE MARKETING RIGHT.

WHY DO SO MANY PODCASTS FAIL?

  1. THEY’RE MORE OF THE SAME

There are a lot of shows out there without a single original idea. Interview after interview after interview. Two friends chatting. Shows where “we just hang out and share our authentic voices and unique perspectives on life”. DOOMED.

2. THEY SOUND “FINE”

  • If YouTubers who make that stupid shocked face in their thumbnails can make their content sound good, so can you.

  • You have to go beyond good to “amazing”. Spatial audio. Immersive experiences. Great music. Actually writing a script.

  • Your audio has to be so good it’s either invisible or stand-out.

3. THEY DON’T WANT TO DO THE MARKETING

  • “If you build it, they will come” is nonsense.

  • Even a great podcast won’t succeed if no one knows it exists.

  • You need a solid marketing plan, INCLUDING a paid media budget, or you’re wasting your money.

HOW TO NOT FAIL AT PODCASTING

DON’T BE BORING

You’re competing with movies, books, social media, and porn. Find a really specific niche, make something that only you can make, make it worth talking about. Ideas are the last unfair advantage.

EXECUTE EXCELLENTLY

You’re making a show. Make it f*cking great. Innovate. Do it live, do it backwards, do it for 3 hours, or for 30 seconds. Tell a story, solve a mystery. Take people on a journey. Go on a journey yourself.

MARKET THE HELL OUT OF IT

Start with a show that’s already talkable. Then create an actual strategy. Do a competitive analysis. Create a content plan. Create a channel strategy. Set aside money for advertising. Organic marketing is free because it’s worthless.

IF THAT SOUNDS OVERWHELMING, THEN GOOD NEWS! YOU’RE NOT CRAZY.

Only delusional people think creating ANY piece of culture or content is easy. Fortunately I’m here to do all of the above if you can’t or don’t want to, and have money. Get in touch and we’ll do a free call to see if the stars align for us to work together.

Recent Client Work

Energy Transitions - A podcast about people and projects accelerating the energy transition in Europe and beyond.

I’m currently editing and advising on three sustainability podcasts, including this one from Enlit.

It’s a bi-weekly podcast about all things energy transition related. From technology and innovation to market related insights and start-ups making an impact, this podcast provides a current and future perspective of the energy landscape.

This show is built for industry experts, exploring high-level technology, data, and legislation issues around the future of the energy transition. And it places Enlit squarely in the middle of it.

The Hard Way - What I learned in 5 days of not catching a fish, Part 1

The Hard Way is a show I produced for Just Like Papa, an outdoors and survival retail store in Cape Town. The show features stories of adventure from its founder, Thomas Ferreira.

However, in this episode, I went with Thomas and friends on a fly-fishing adventure, and got to report from the front lines. The Hard Way.

This is the story of Just Like Papa's 5-day fishing trip to Karoolskraal fishing camp near Witsand in the Western Cape.

Change in one generation

The Change in One Generation Podcast, hosted by journalist and author, Ruda Landman, and change expert and academic, Dr Frank Magwegwe, dives into the change stories of fascinating South Africans who’ve risen above difficult circumstances to achieve great success in their respective fields.

I produced and edited this show on behalf of BrightRock Insurance and the Change Exchange, who are building a library of content around “Change Science”.

Recent Personal Work

Moving to the UK, with Sam Beckbessinger

In this show, I interview South Africans who have emigrated, to find out why they left SA, how they left, and what their experience has been like in their new life.

I also interview some experts in fields like financial emigration, shipping, pet emigration, and more.

MindScape Meditations - The Beach

This is the pilot episode of Mindscape Meditations, titled "The Beach".

Mindscape meditations are like yoga for the imagination. They are ten-minute meditative visualisations that take listeners on a journey to serene locations and experiences where they can stretch their creativity.

This pilot has been produced with Health & Wellness brands in mind.

Ten episode have already been written and are waiting for production and because the production process is relatively simple, this is a budget-friendly show.

Off the Grid - A practical guide to shedding load-shedding

This show is passion project, designed to help South Africans navigate load-shedding and alternative energy.

It’s the most complex show I’ve built so far and I’m proud of it. My goals in creating this show are to reach more than 50 000 downloads.

Radio & Interactive Audio

Herotel Radio - The Internet is waiting for you

These radio spots demonstrate the style of radio writing that comes easiest to me. High paced wordplay, alliteration, and assonance that stands out from standard hard-sell spots.

City of Cape Town - Fire Prevention Radio

Fires can rage out of control in informal settlements across South Africa, destroying homes and taking lives.

In this multilingual series of ads, innocuous items like paraffin stoves, cigarettes, and candles become terrifying monsters.

I’m proud and thankful for the truly great voice acting in this series.

Sanlam Virtual Marathon - Locational Audio

When the pandemic hit, marathons were on hold, indefinitely. However, the organisers of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon decided to produce a virtual marathon.

Runners could run when and where they wanted to, but a series of immersive audio clips were triggered as they completed distance milestones, recreating the actual route of the Cape Town Marathon.

We produced 30+ audio clips in which our host pointed out landmarks, shared interesting fact and historical notes, described the virtual scene to the runners, and worked in virtual brand content for the race sponsors.

Just For Fun

What if James Bond was…kinda evil?

This short comedy radio play is an experiment on what can be achieved with voice talent on Fiverr, all recorded remotely with no direction beyond a text brief.

The result? A fun piece, but some of the performances are flat.

Another comedy fantasy story with a great Fiverr voice actor, and me playing the singing sword.

Let’s have a coffee and a chat.

It’s a form. You know what to do.
